THE COATS OF JOSEPH-II
In our last study we looked at Joseph’s “COAT OF COLORS.” Several things we learned about that coat:
•
It was a free gift from his father and salvation is a FREE GIFT from OUR Father.
•
It was made of “MANY PIECES;” many lambs died for that coat. In salvation, the one Lamb of God died for the whole world.
•
It was a BLOOD-STAINED coat, dipped in blood and presented to the father. In Salvation, the redeemed will
wash their robes in the blood of the Lamb.
In Genesis: Blood was shed to cover an individual. We see the first instance of blood being spilled when God killed an animal to provide covering for an individual.
In Exodus: Blood was sacrificed to cover a family. Each household in Israel was instructed to apply the blood of a lamb to their doorposts. This sign protected them from God's wrath during the final plague in Egypt, illustrating how sacrifice brings deliverance and protection to the family.
In Tabernacle and Temple Worship: Blood was shed to cover the nation. Over the next 1,400 years, through tabernacle and temple practices, blood continued to play a vital role. Here, blood was shed daily to atone for the sins of the entire nation. Priests sprinkled blood on each piece of furniture within the tabernacle or temple, signifying the continual need for cleansing and forgiveness for all the people.
"THE BLOOD WILL NEVER LOSE ITS POWER!" The biblical narrative consistently affirms that sacrificial blood holds enduring power, offering atonement, protection, and cleansing across generations.
This will bring us to Joseph’s second coat: JOSEPH’S COAT CHARACTER. That was the only coat the Egyptians ever saw. [TAKE YOUR BIBLE AND READ ALL OF GENESIS 39-40]
Having been a slave in Egypt, an officer of Pharaoh by the name Potiphar bought him from some Ishmaelites. And God was with Joseph everywhere he went. “The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord did everything he did to prosper in his hand.” (Gen. 39:2-3). Potiphar designated Joseph as the overseer of his household. Consequently, the Lord conferred blessings upon the Egyptian's residence due to Joseph's presence.
Enter Potiphar’s wife. “And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast LONGING EYES on Joseph, and she said, ‘Lie with me.’” Joseph said, “NO WAY!” Day after day she enticed him to sleep with her, even getting physically aggressive, Joseph tore away from her and, you guessed it, (v. 12) “she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me." ”But he left his garment in her hand and fled and ran outside.”
Joseph faced relentless temptation from Potiphar’s wife but consistently demonstrated integrity by refusing her advances. Even when confronted with physical aggression, he chose to flee rather than compromise his principles, highlighting his strong character and commitment to righteousness.
Scripture describes many instances of temptation, from Adam and Eve’s fall to Abraham’s struggles and David’s failings. In contrast, Jesus resisted temptation in the wilderness and did not sin. The Bible highlights how individuals have both conquered temptations, as well as been conquered by temptation throughout history.
But God’s Word full of passages that deal with temptation so we can deal with it in our lives. Beginning with the prayer of Jesus in Matthew 6:13: “And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” And Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” Later on, in the New Testament James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” SO WHY DO WE ALL FACE TEMPTATION EVERY DAY? I AM GLAD YOU ASKED!!
GOD WANTS TO REVEAL OUR WEAKNESSES TO US
KING DAVID’S WEAKNESS was adultery and murder. If anyone would have said “You are going to commit adultery and cover it up with murder,” he would have said, “Man, I slay GIANTS. I kill lions and bears, but I would never THAT!” Then it happened! 2 Samuel 11:2-5 “Then it happened one evening that David rose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. So, David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” Then David sent messengers and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.”
Then there were the words every cheating husband does not want to ever hear. “And the woman conceived; so, she sent and told David, and said, ‘I am with child.’” NOW WHAT IS GOING TO DO? To save reputation he ordered Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” Uriah was undoubtably a faithful warrior who loved the King very much. But David him to the front lines which got him killed.
GOD WANTS TO REVEAL TO US THE NEED FOR WATCHFULLNESS
(Matthew 26:41; Mark 13:33; Mark 14:38) “Watch and pray, lest you ENTER INTO TEMPTATION. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
SAUL SLEPT and David took his spear and could have taken his head!( 1 Samuel 26:12) “So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul’s head, and they got away; and no man saw or knew it or awoke. For they were all asleep because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen on them.”
SAMSON SLEPT and got the most expensive haircut in history. (Judges 16:19) ”Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and HIS STRENGTH LEFT HIM.” He lost his strength, he lost his sight, and he eventually LOST HIS LIFE!
SEVANTS SLEPT and an enemy sowed tares among the wheat.
DISCIPLES SLEPT while Jesus was being betrayed and arrested. We must stay on RED ALEART at all times!
GOD WANTS TO REVEAL TO US THE NEED FOR TRUST IN HIM
Throughout Joseph’s many trials, he consistently maintained his confidence in God’s Providence and Protection. Despite being wrongly accused by his boss’s wife, Joseph did not waver in his integrity or lose faith. Even when his friends forgot about him during his years in prison, Joseph remained steadfast in trusting God. His resilience and unshaken faith serve as a powerful example of how to remain true in difficult circumstances, relying on God rather than becoming bitter or discouraged.
Isaiah 40:30-31. “Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength: They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
Throughout my life I have been through enough crises for A FEW lifetimes. I am afraid that too much of it was my own doing. But there were other times when I did not know if I would live through the day or night. But, through it all God has sustained me and protected me. I would love to say my CHARACTER is equal to that of Joseph. But “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 3:12-14) THANKS BE TO JESUS, ONE DAY, my character will be JUST LIKE HIS.
